Navigating the Rough Seas of Change (published in Sedona Magazine 9-26-19)

September 26, 2019

Being in a human body can be very stressful. None of us ever received a “how-to manual” when we first got here. We had to rely on what we were taught by our parents and the rest of our family members. We assumed that what we experienced with them was normal and thus, continued to expect such treatment throughout the rest of our lives.

Often, as we got older, we came to find out that what we thought was “the norm” was far from that, and the people around us acted quite differently from the way we were taught to act. Some of us thought love would solve all our problems, only to experience that love was often a source of heartbreak and disappointment. Where were we supposed to find the answers then? What was real?

Life has proven to be quite hard and confusing for many of us, who have tried to “do it right” and “do as we were told” for so many years. After trying to do it our parents’ way, we often found ourselves unhappy, alone, and wondering where we went wrong. At some point, it may have gotten so bad that we FINALLY HAD TO WAKE UP—to a different, spiritual path, in which self-awareness, personal growth, and reconnecting with God and our Higher Self were all that made sense.

We had now found meaning and purpose to it all. The phrase “there are no accidents” became the foundation of our lives, and we were taught to trust life as it unfolded, doing our best to learn from all the situations and circumstances life presented to us. There was a purpose to it all. We could now relax and trust that we were on the right path, and that life was indeed getting better and better, at a deep level of our being.

Then, however, we hit May, 2019, and the safe and secure little “life boat” on which we sailed through life suddenly hit a torrential storm, and the constant threat of capsizing has continued to linger with us. There is a new wave of “heavy-duty transformation” that is upon us all at this time, and we are in a storm that has not been so easy to weather. Some of us may be super confused at this time, because we THOUGHT we had it all together—prior to this period.

Understand the nature of transformation. It ultimately means death of the old form (or self, in this case) in order to make room for a new, different form to emerge. In nature, the tiny bud blossoms into a many-petaled flower, which eventually loses its petals and dies… only to have more buds replace it, with more flowers.  Death and rebirth.

A more extreme example of “heavy-duty”’ transformation in nature is that of the caterpillar into a butterfly. The caterpillar spins a cocoon, stays within it for a period of time, and at just the perfect moment, breaks free from the cocoon to find that it can fly. That caterpillar had no clue of what was to come… it just knew it needed to spin the cocoon and remain there “until further instruction.”

We are all like the caterpillar at this time. We really don’t know “what is coming,” or “what we’ll be like once the period in the cocoon is over.” We just know that we are somewhere different, and we’re not sure what’s going on, and sometimes, it even feels like we’ve lost a sense of meaning and purpose in our lives.

During such period of intense transformation, there is always a “death” period, followed by a period of “rebirth.” And during the death period, we often—unlike the caterpillar—question ourselves, wonder why we’re doing what we’re doing, and often question the meaning of life and the purpose to why we are here. During the “death” period, we may even feel more tired, more “dead,” and unable to be our normal, cheery self.

We may even create more physical challenges during this time—falling down, hurting different body parts, stubbing our toes—things that are part of “creating death” in a small way. We FEEL the energy of death, and unlike the caterpillar, don’t have the luxury of curling up in a cocoon “until it’s all over.” We need to keep on being in the world, doing what we do to survive in life, and interacting with all the other people out there going through a similar experience. This is not an easy time.

Half the battle is understanding what’s going on. That is, you can now know that what you are going through isn’t bad, isn’t personal, and is all about helping you to transform into something new and different from who and what you have been up until now. If you feel more tired these days, it’s okay, and not unusual.

You may have more thoughts of getting older, because transformation carries this “death energy” with it, so you may be focused on how much older you’re feeling. This, too, shall pass. The important thing about this period is that you continue to let go of your expectations of how you “should be,” and let yourself be however you are. Remember, you can’t just curl up in the cocoon until it’s over. So you are going to have to figure out a way to be in life that works for you.

Think of several things you enjoy doing. They may be things you do a lot, or things you wish you could do a lot. Make a decision to do them every week, or at least more often than you do them now. Find things that bring you joy. It may be hard, since this “death energy” is upon us all, but there is also room to CHOOSE more circumstances and activities that bring you joy.

Knowing that you are in this process of “heavy-duty transformation” can also ease the pain you may be feeling.  That is, you know that this isn’t “the end of the road.” It is merely a “bump in the road,” and you will get to the other side of it. Although the caterpillar isn’t judging itself for being a caterpillar, and accepts life as it is, it is surely a far cry from being able to fly, as it is able to do, once the period of transformation is complete.

So know that one day, you WILL fly free from all this. You just have to make it through this period without “surrendering to” or “longing for” death, since those are some of the feelings this process will trigger in you. When the energy of death is upon you, do you let it get to you, or do you acknowledge it, let it know you are willing to transform, and not allow it to overtake you.

You may know some people who are allowing it to overtake them. You see this when people attempt to commit suicide. I have become aware of more people in this situation than in previous times. This is absolutely missing the “rebirth” part of the transformational process.

You’ve got to make it through the “feeling like you’re dying” phase, to the “wow, I can’t believe this is how I am now” phase. If you give into the death energy and accompanying feelings of wanting life to be over, then you definitely will not make it to the rebirth part, and you will miss an incredible opportunity life is presenting to you at this time.

Hang in there. Do your best to consciously choose more activities that bring you joy and happiness, and know that it’s okay to “take it easy” and ride the waves of change cautiously until the transformation is complete—when you will get to know the new and improved version of yourself. Do your best to love yourself throughout this process, and practice techniques for self-improvement, clearing the subconscious, and spiritual growth, as all are extremely valuable tools at this time.
